Working Out For Families
Hiedi Benya Working out for families is a great idea because it will teach your children the importance of physical fitness. One fun way to get the family involved is by going for a hike. Most children, including teens and tweens, love to get out and get moving, and this is a great way to build on that. Not only will you get in some exercise, but you will also get to experience nature at its best while spending quality time with your family. If you are just beginning your family exercise routine, talk with everyone and let them know what you have planned. Get out the calendar and set a date for your hike. While you have the calendar out make a group decision about which day will suit your schedule on a weekly basis to keep your fitness quest going. Once you decide on the time, choose the location. There are several places that work wonderfully for hiking. Check with your local recreation department to see where the parks in your community are located. You may also want to see if you have any state or national parks nearby. Many times these are filled with various hiking trails suitable for all fitness levels. If a park is not close by, you can still go hiking. A careful drive through your neighborhood or community can reveal several different hiking routes. If you want to make it a little more challenging, make sure the route that you choose has a few hills. Before you strike out on your family hike, you want to make sure that everyone has the right gear. Depending on your terrain, you may need certain type of shoes. Hiking boots are a good choice if you decide to go with the park idea. Most park trails are either dirt or gravel, and you need the right shoes to keep you safe from injury. Another thing to consider is the insects in your area. If you will be in a wooded area, make sure that you apply bug repellent to keep those nasty little creatures at bay. You also want to dress according to the weather, and take plenty of water. Remember that it is easier to remove layers of clothing then to not have enough and need more. Hiking is just one working out for families idea. There's going to a pool and having fun relay races by picking teams. You could also play doubles tennis. A group bike ride around your neighborhood is also something fun to do. It might even be fun to brainstorm working out ideas as a family. You never know what may come of it. Remember, though, along with teaching your children the importance of physical fitness by exercising as a family, it is also important to teach them how fun exercise can be.
