Your first attempt probably will feel a little awkward, but if you keep with it, you'll soon start getting the timing and body placement right.
The key is to put one foot in front of the other instead of standing with your feet side-by-side. Start with the hoop against your back at your waist. Start the rotation with a gentle push around your waist -- and shift your weight back and forth between your front and back foot to keep the hula hoop moving.
Keeping the hoop twirling around your waist is important. Do it to your favorite music. Get a bunch of friends and have a hooping party. But again, keep using it. If you do, your waistline will really show improvement as the unwanted fat burns off the midriff and stomach muscles tighten.
